WEEKEND WRAP

24 Jul 2017 by Roxburgh Park Football Club

Another week goes by and we saw some great results for the Magpie faithful. Seniors action on Saturday took place at Jacana where the talk all week was that Cam Cloke was destined to kick the 10 goals he needed to reach the ton and that it was inevitable…..except nobody had shown our boys that script. Kicking with a stiff breeze in the first term, we held the Jags scoreless whilst kicking 3.9. A 27 point 1/4 time lead wasn’t enough and we really should have led by more if we had kicked straight. Jacana kicked 6 goals to 1 in the second term to take a 10 point lead into the main break. Out boys stuck to the task and kept the raging premiership favourites honest in the second half but could not get over the line. Mark and Brodie kicked 2 each while Harley had one of his best games for the club, in and under and getting the hard ball while also using it well. Kajan Gn was a rock down back and kept Clokey to 6 majors to ensure that the 100 mark will have to wait until next week.

Ressies had another win and close to within one win of top spot. The top of the table clash was expected to be a shootout but instead became a bit of a slog but our boys came out winners by 21 points. We were helped by some wayward kicking from Jacana (4.15) but our pressure caused them to rush shots and miss. Youssef was the star up forward with 4 while Jay kicked 2. Jovan and Jake – fresh off being the cover model for the EDFL record – were named in the best. I’m sure these two sides will meet deep in the finals again so watch this space!

The 19’s enjoyed a week off courtesy of a forfeit from Hadfield. There are a few big weeks coming with two games against table topping East Keilor in the next month which will shape their finals chances.

Thirds went down to Maribyrnong Park by 100 points but the effort from the guys was sensational. We started the game with 14 on the field and Marcus from the under 15s even filled in as a 15th man to help out. Considering the numerical disadvantage, keeping Marby to just two goals in the final term when everyone was tiring showed the heart these boys have.

We also enjoyed a rare womens game on Saturday, with our girls traveling to Glenroy. The ladies gave it everything but came up short by 79 points. We were only 2 points down and 1/4 time and 19 points down at the break but Glenroy were able to run away with it in the second half. Thanks again to the youthies who stepped up to help out with the extra numbers on Saturday.

Sunday saw all but one of our teams drawn away from home. The 17’s had the bye and a chance to rest up before their final game prior to finals.

Youth girls played away to Hillside and were looking to climb into 6th spot but the Sharks got the better of the contest and ran out winners by 7 points. The 11 point 1/2 time margin was down to 8 points at 3/4 time and we were in the game but we could only register a behind in the last term to go down in a close one. Alana kicked 2 goals while Angelica and Ashley Ashlee were named in the best.

The Under 15’s were up against it playing the table topping Aberfeldie. and the gap proved too great, with Abers winning this one by 128 points. One last chance to give it everything next week boys before coming back bigger and better next season!

Under 13’s were at Jacana to play St Francis. Like Saturday, there was a fair breeze blowing down one end and we used to well in the second term, turning an 11 point deficit into an 8 point lead at the break. The Saints used the breeze in the third term to again lead by 11 at 3/4 time and unfortunately our lads were only able to kick the 3 behinds with the breeze to go down by 8 points. Cody, Cem and Emirhan with the goals in a great even team performance

Under 11’s…well as BT would say – WOWEEEEE! What a cracker this game was. Those of us lucky enough to be there witnessed what will be known as “the Miracle on Canning Street” as we stole the win from Avondale Heights in the last 30 seconds. The breeze was again prevalent and the Heights used it well to go into the first change leading by 15 points but Zac did score a crucial goal into the wind (the only one at that end) which gave us hope. Half time saw us trail by only 2 points and we restricted them to one goal with the breeze in the third thanks to some heroic defending by Luke and Giggles. With two minutes left in the final term, Mayz kicked a goal to get us level and then with 30 seconds on the clock he again got the ball at half forward, stepped around what seemed to be 15 defenders and slotted the winner! There were massive scenes on the final siren as we pulled off the miracle come from behind win.

The only team at home this week was our under 9’s and they put on a great display for the fans that showed up. Hard, contested footy from Zane in the mids set us up well and the toughness of Zac all over the ground saw him awarded the best on ground by the Keilor coach. Great stuff guys!

Next weeks action kicks off on Friday night with out second last Friday night Thirds game for the season as Greenvale make the short trip up Somerton Road. Game starts at 7:00pm so get on down and support the boys!

Saturday action starts at 9:30am as the Under 19’s take on top of the table East Keilor. This is a grand final rematch from last season and a win for our boys could put them into the top 4 so it’s all to play for lads

Seniors and Ressies are in action against Northern Saints for the second time in 4 weeks. Ressies kick off at 11:45 and will be looking to build on the win they enjoyed a few weeks ago over the Saints. We’re still a possibility of finishing on top so need to make every game count from here.

Seniors kick off as 2:15 and if we are to have any hope of playing finals we have to win everything and hope for results to go our way. The boys won’t stop fighting and will be out to cause some upsets in the last few weeks of the season.

Sunday is our final round of Womens and junior football for the regular season and all teams apart from the Under 9’s and Youth girls will be at home.

The day starts at 8:30am with out high flying 11’s playing Tullamarine . The 11’s are assured of finals so we’d love as many of the Roxy faithful down here on Sunday to cheer the boys on in their last hitout at home before finals start.

13’s play Airport West at 10:00am, 15’s are up at 11:30am also against the Eagles, while the 17’s play Keilor at 1:15 in what will be a game which decides who finishes 3rd and 4th on the ladder and will be a good hitout before the two teams meet again in an elimination final the following week. Our women round out the day with a clash against Glen Orden at 3:15pm. The ladies will be looking to get their third win of the season so get around ’em!

Our Youth girls final fixture of the season is away to VU Western Spurs at 12:30 while out Under 9’s finish the season away to Maribyrnong Park.

We will be having a sausage sizzle from 10-2 on Sunday for all of our teams thanks to our friends at Melbourne Estate Agents so everyone is encouraged to get down and enjoy a free sausage or two and support the junior and womens teams on the day.
