WEEKEND WRAP

WEEKEND WRAP * There were some surprising results on the weekend for Roxburgh Park in the Essendon District Football League games which were played both at Lakeside and away.

The weekend started with a Friday Night Thirds game against Greenvale. The Jets sat atop the ladder undefeated. We fielded a side featuring 3 Under 15s players and 2 under 17s and gave everything we had. A 44 point lead to Greenvale after a 7 goal to nil first term didn’t look good for us but the boys dug in during the second term and held the jets you just 3 goals making it a 10 goal lead at half time. The side worked hard to cover the run that Greenvale had across all lines but unfortunately were unable to impact the scoreboard and lost by 126 points. Nobby was his usual self – tough at the ball and used it well, Ayden was a bull who kept putting his head over the ball while Harun was at his combative best in the ruck

Saturday morning saw the 19s start the day with a crucial game against last year’s Grand final opponent in East Keilor. A win would see us leap into the top 4 while a loss would have seen us struggle to make finals. With a howling gale blowing towards the far end of the ground, the Cougars jumped out to a 23 point lead at 1/4 time. With the wind our boys hit their straps and kicked 7 goals to nothing to lead by 22 points at the half. Easts responded with 3 goals to nothing in the 3rd so we took a 1 point advantage into the final term. They threw everything at us but we got the only goal of the term and won by 2 goals. Lachlan and Brock the multiple goal kickers while Brodie was named BOG

Reserves were up next and with Jacana losing had a chance to take top spot. Unfortunately the Northern Saints had other ideas. With the wind again playing havoc, scoring at the social club end was nearly impossible. We went into 3/4 time trailing by 32 points but a last quarter surge saw us fall short by only 3 points. Jay kicked 3 while Moudy and Belal kicked 2 each. We need to regroup and work as a team to try to get to the top of the ladder before the seasons end.

The last game on Saturday was the seniors where we were looking you bounce back after last week’s narrow loss. With the breeze we had multiple scoring shots but, similar to the Jacana game, we failed to put the score on the board. We kicked 2.8 to only lead by 20 at 1/4 time and the lead should have been much bigger. In the second term the saints used the wind to full effect and led by 22 points at the main break. 4 goals in the third term saw us close to within 5 points but against the breeze in the last term we had no answers and went down by 35 points. Hayden kicked 2 and the rest were single goal kickers. Harley was named best along with Jamie, Ryan, Jack, Tumay and Hayden.

Sunday was the last round of junior and women’s games for the regular season. The day started with the Under 11s up against Tullamarine. With an eye on finals Tim played a few players in different positions. From the first quarter we didn’t look in the game and in the end suffered a disappointing loss. Mayz and Brooklyn kicking our only 2 goals.

The Under 13s hosted Airport West and unfortunately were unable to score with the breeze at their back in the first quarter. We were only 2 points down at half time and 8 points down at 3/4 time but they ran away in the last to win by 4 goals. Have some time off boys and come back bigger and better next year

The Under 15s were also up against the Eagles and once again were jumped early. They were 32 points down at half time but fought hard in the second half to go down by 46. It was all single goal kickers with Moe and Stephen named in the best. Enjoy the off season guys and see you in pre season

Under 17s had a game against Keilor which was a teaser for the final to be played this weekend. We held a 4 point half time lead but a 4 goal to nil 3rd term saw Keilor leading by 17 points. We got back in the contest and had our noses in front until late in the game but couldn’t hold on and Keilor ended up with a 3 point win. Kristian, Jack and James with 2 each with Musa named as the best afield

The final game at home saw our women take on Glen Orden. The ladies were keen to end the season with a win and didn’t disappoint the crowd on hand at Lakeside. We held a 2 goal lead at half time and went on to win by 17 points. Tricia kicked 2 and Sarah the other goal. Dave was full of praise for the games of Emily, Tricia and Cheree and the youthies stood up and helped us get over the line. Great season ladies!

The other two teams in action were Youth Girls and the Under 9s.

Youthies were away to VU Western Spurs but unfortunately could not get the win to end the season. We were jumped early to trail by 3 goals at 1/4 time but held them goalless in the second. The spurs were able to reload after half time and pull away to win by 71 points. Alana with our only goal while Klarissa, Chloe and Ashlee were named in the best.

Under 9s were away to Maribyrnong Park and put on a real show. Hard tackling from Zac, Cooper and Zane – skills on display from Jack and Lucas and hard running from Carlos, Heidi and Victoria were highlights. It’s been great seeing the kids gel as a team and we look forward to seeing them all back next year

This weekend again kicks off on Friday night where the Thirds host Westmeadows . It’s the final game of the year for the 3rds so it would be great to get a crowd down to Lakeside.

On Saturday the 19s start the day against Glenroy at Sewell Reserve. It’s another must win game for the boys to ensure they hold onto their finals spot.

Reserves and seniors are in action at Keilor Park . Reserves need to get back on the winners list and hope Jacana drop another game so we can jump to the top of the ladder. Seniors are now only playing for pride with finals out of the equation but will be out to show that next year we can still be a force to be reckoned with

Sunday sees two junior sides in finals action.

The Under 17s play a knockout final against Keilor at Overland reserve in East Keilor at 2:20pm. We had a close game this week and will be look you keep our season alive for at least another week. Let’s get as many of the Roxy faithful down to cheer them on.

The Under 11s play Marby Park at Keilor Park at 9:45am and we’d love to pull big crowd down to support the side. They’ve had a great year and will love to go one better than they did in the finals last season
