WEEKEND WRAP

Weekend Wrap *
As Eddie McGuire said on Thursday night…..What a BIIIIG week it’s been in footy! Essendon District Football League divison 2 Footy that is! Saturday started with a crucial game for our 19’s at home to Hillside Sharks Football Club who were sitting above us on the ladder. A loss would have left us vulnerable to dropping out of the finals race so this was a real 8 point kind of game for the lads. Hillside got the early jump to lead by 5 points at 1/4 time, but would rue the missed chances later in the game as they kicked 3.5 for the quarter. Our boys hit back in the second term, kicking 3.2 to 1.2 to take the half time lead 38-31. After half time we blew the game open in the premiership quarter as we kicked 5.1 to 3.1 and led by 19 points at the last change. A final term where we kicked 4.1 to 3.2 saw us victorious by 24 points and stake a real claim to being a finalist this season in this combined Div 1/Div2 comp which is a massive credit to the boys.Bourkey kicked 4, The Greek Freak Peter with 3 while Friesy and Whitey kicked 2 each. Jords, Eren, Bourkey, Michael, the returning Brandon and Whitey named in the best

Our reserves were next up playing against Burnside Heights Football Club and flexed their muscle as they smashed the hapless Bears by 205 points. We held a 55 point 1/4 time lead, and led by 90 at half time, having kept them to 1 behind for the half. We piled on the misery in the third quarter as we kicked 11.3 to their single goal. We kept rolling in the final term and kicked 8.4 to no score for a resounding win. Billy and Youi kicked 10 each while Jay Jay kicked 4 and Moudy 3. The midfield supply from Alex and Azza saw plenty of forward entries for the most dangerous forward line in the comp to feast on. Our forward line boasts the 4 leading goal kickers in the league – Billy on 66, Jay on 41, Youi on 38 and Moudy on 37.

Finally our seniors did battle with the Bears in the last game of the day and it was a back and forth battle all day long. For a nice change we jumped out to an early lead courtesy of straight kicking, leading 3.1 to 1.7 at 1/4 time. It was an arm wrestle in the second term as we wasted a lot of our forward entries, kicking 3.4 to 3 straight to hold a 10 point lead at the main break. Carlos was immense in the second term with hard running and clean ball use his highlights. After half time they threw everything at us, and our goal kicking woes returned as we kicked 4.6 for the term to the Bears 5.3. Harley was powerful in the middle, hitting packs at full tilt and brushing aside would be tacklers with ease as the skipper looked to lift the side. Covelli was looming large as their only dangerous target up forward and early in the last term he looked like he might be the difference as he kicked his 7th goal to put them in front. But with only a few minutes left, we enjoyed 4 straight centre clearances which resulted in 4 goals as we finally broke the game open, kicking 6.3 to 3.2 for the term. Peter was brilliant getting the ball down the throat of the mids late and the power running of Pitty, Carlos, Barney and Mosh got the job done. Saba kicked 6 straight (make him the goal kicking coach) to play a major role in the win dedicated to our 250 game star Mosh who kicked 2 himself. Carlos helped himself to 3 goals along with 2 from Hammer and Geeza and a single to Pratty. Pitty, #MOSH250, Barn, Friesy, Saba and H named in the best

Finally on Sunday our Under 17’s played their Prelim Final against Oak Park Community Sports Association at Hansen Reserve. The boys played a great game but unfortunately went down by 7 points. 7.7 – 49 to 5.12 – 42. We needed to convert those chances up forward when we had them. We led by a point at quarter time after a tense first term then looked like putting the game to bed at half-time with a 25 point lead. The Kangas hit back hard with two goals in the opening minutes of the 3rd to close it right back up and kicked 4.3 to 1.2 for the term but we still led at 3/4 time by 5 points. The boys battled it out until the end but unfortunately couldn’t quite get there. Two freak goals from the boundary into a stiff breeze by the Oakers were the nail in the coffin for the season. Ahmed and Langers kicked two each while Tyler kicked a goal of the year contender baulking half the Oak Park side and slotting a beauty from the boundary. Tyler, Josh, Langers, Jordy and Alfie among the best on the day. Massive shout out to Jack, Tylar and Josh for stepping up and taking over coaching the boys and getting them where you did. It was a massive effort to get this far boys. Come back and get that flag next year

Next week is the final week of senior football for the regular season and we’ve got some massive games to come

Our Under 19’s take on East Keilor FC in another must win clash at Cougar Land. The Cougars currently sit 2nd on the ladder and we are sitting 4th. A win will guarantee finals the following week while a loss can still see us qualify for finals if Moonee Valley lose to Taylors Lakes OR if they win but don’t win by enough to make up the difference in %. It’s all to play for boys! Go out there and get that win to assure yourselves a spot in finals.

Ressies and seniors are away to Moonee Valley FC. A win for the ressies will secure them at least second spot depending on the result of the Jacana game. The Jags play Coburg so both games are potential finals match ups for the following week as the top 4 all play each other in the final round.

Seniors will unfortunately bow out after this weekend, but we all know the boys will be playing for pride and looking to upset the Fog’s run at the finals by inflicting a loss on them in the last regular season game of the year.
