WEEKEND WRAP

Weekend Wrap***

Well the final round of Senior Essendon District Football League Div 2 football is in the books and while not all the results went the way we wanted, we’ve still got 2 sides alive going into the first week of finals.

To start the day on Saturday the Under 19’s boys travelled to East Keilor FC. A win would have secured a finals spot but a loss could still see us get through if results went our way. A bright start saw us with one more scoring shot for the term but we trailed by 4 points as we kicked 2.2 to their 3 straight. A 3 goal to 1 second quarter by the Cougars saw them hold the ascendancy at the main change by 19 points. Following an even 3rd term in which both sides kicked 3 apiece, the game was still anyone’s at 3/4 time with a margin of just 22 points. Unfortunately for our boys we failed to hit the scoreboard in the final term and East Keilor ran out winners by 39 points. There were no multiple goal kickers on the day while Brandon, Lachie, Jake, Brodie, Kyle and Bourkey were named in the best. The boys finished in 4th by percentage in front of Moonee Valley so will go on and play finals next week. Pete finished the year as the leading goal kicker with 36 goals (second best in the comp) while Bourkey bagged 23 and Cassar 21.

Reserves were next up away to Moonee Valley FC and the boys set up a resounding win by trouncing the Fog in the first term. We kicked 5.4 to 0.1 to set up the early advantage of 33 points. The Valley made a game of it in the second term and hit back with 3 goals to 1 to cut the margin to 23 points at half time. A rev up from Phil got the boys moving again after the break and we piled on 5 goals to 2 to again extend the margin out to 41 points at the final break. A 4 goal to 2 final term saw us get the vital points that takes us to the minor premiership with a 53 point victory. Youi kicked another bag, helping himself to another half dozen while Billy kicked 4 and Jay chimed in with 2. Special mention to Old Father Time Kirky for his left foot special from the boundary. Daicos-like from the pensioner! Best were Azza, Adam, Moe, Youi H, Nick and Youi M. Billy was the league leading goal kicker with 70 goals for the season while Youi was second on 44, Jay third on 43 while the 4th highest goal kicker was Moudy on 37….now that is POTENT!

Seniors had their final hit out of the season and we were again struck by injuries and unavailability as we fielded possibly the youngest senior side in the clubs history. We had 17’s players Squeak, Tyler, Scott, Brock, and Liam playing with 19’s players Peter, Brodie, Josh and Jack O so it was a very much youthful side that took the park. Unfortunately an 8 goal to 3 first quarter set the tone for the rest of the day. The boys gave it everything but the margin was 48 points at the mid way point of the match. That margin only grew after half time as the young legs struggled to keep up and we ended up losing the final game of the season by 107 points. Hammer kicked two while our best were Harley, Tyler, Scott, Beany, Hammer and Carlos. One highlight was seeing Beany run out for a senior game alongside his son Liam, a great day they will both remember forever. Hammer finished the year as our leading goalkicker with 31 goals with Saba close behind on 28. It was a sad farewell to coaching for Travis who’s done an amazing job for the club this year in what have been very trying circumstances. All the best Trav and thanks for all you’ve been able to do this year. #freshstart2018

Onto next week and we have two teams in finals action – The Under 19’s and Reserves.

The Under 19’s have a knockout final against Hillside Sharks Football Club who we managed to beat two weeks ago. This game will be a cracker and will be held at Windy Hill at 9:30am on Saturday. We’ll enjoy having guys like Barney, Whitey and Pete who don’t need to back up for seniors later in the day so the boys can go flat out at it next Saturday! Good luck lads.

After finishing the season as minor premiers, the Reserves play Coburg Districts Football Club on Saturday at 11:30am at Coburg City Oval. The wide spaces at Coburg City Oval should suit our potent forward line as we look to get the win which would earn us the week off and an automatic spot into a grand final. The boys will be looking to make it back to back flags and are in the best possible position to do so. Let’s get as many people to both grounds to support both of our teams!

This weeks wrap is bought to you by McDonald’s Roxburgh Park. Fancy a Big Mac, Cheeseburger, Coke or Fries?
They’ve got all of your favourites at McDonalds in Roxburgh Park! Come on in and enjoy a feast from the all day breakfast menu or the Do it yourself range of burgers. there is something for everyone’s taste at Macca’s!
