Weekend Wrap - Round 5

6 May 2018 by Roxburgh Park Football Club

WEEKEND WRAP***

A slightly shorter version of the wrap this weekend given there was no junior football on Sunday

EDFL action returned to Lakeside for the first time in 2018 as the Under 19’s kicked off proceedings against Northern Saints. Our boys started well and held a slim lead at quarter time, leading 2.2-14 to 1.0-6. Unfortunately, the Saints blew the game open in the second term kicking 6.1 to 2.2 to hold a 15 point lead at half time. A scrappy third term saw us kick 1.3 to their 1.5 as we traillied by 17 points at the final change. Our boys have run out games well so far this season so a 3 goal margin didn’t seem too large but we couldn’t get back into the game, our 1.2 for the term not being enough despite holding them 1.3 as we went down by 18 points. Best on ground Brock was the only multiple goal kicker with 2 while Jake., Tylar, Tyler, Jake and Ahmed Kaakour were named in the best. The boys still sit 3rd on the ladder so need to pick their heads up and go again next week

The Reserves were next against Hadfield and gave Phil exactly the result he would have been looking for. We got on the front foot early and held a 27 point lead, 5.4 to 1.1. The second term saw us extend the lead to 45 points as we kicked 4.2 to 1.2. After the main break we lost our way when kicking at goal, only adding 3.6 in an inaccurate term while Hadfield added one goal. Holding a 63 point lead at the final change, our boys relaxed a little and only added 2.5 while holding them to 1 goal, running out victors by 74 points. Domenico kicked 4 whilst Anthony and Belal kicked 3 each. Ryan, Anth, Youssef., Daniel, Aaron and Jovan named amongst the best. Moonee Valleys loss to East Sunbury means we are now a game clear at the top of the ladder with a healthy percentage in hand. Keep the great work up lads!

The Seniors rounded at the day as they handed out a thumping to the Hawks, eventually triumphing by 140 points – our biggest win since our 159 point belting of Burnside in Round 11 2016 when Cappa kicked 8 at the Bear Cave! Similar to the Ressies, we kicked away early and held a 38 point lead – kicking 7.3 to 1.1 to blow out the cobwebs following the bye weekend. We added 5.4 to 2.5 and held a 55 point lead at the main break. The premiership quarter is where we really started to get rolling as we booted 7.3 and kept them scoreless as the lead blew out to an even 100 points as the siren sounded to end the third quarter. We continued our relentless pressure in the last term as we added another 6.5 to their one behind and it was a 140 point demolition job in the end to keep the faithful at Lakeside happy! Luke returned to his sparkling best as he booted 8 and was brilliantly supported by Sammy who kicked 4 against his old side. Tumay chimed in with 3 of his own along with 3 to Mark and two to Jack Elliott and Jayke. Barney was named BOG while big Ferras got things rolling in the middle and around the ground. Jayke, Hayden, Harley and Cappa also in the best afield. The win see’s us leap up to third on the ladder as the ladder starts to take shape.

The Thirds were away to Aberfeldie Sports Club. on Saturday as well but unfortunately after the great win last week they were not able to get the 4 points this week as we went down by 84 points. We were only 3 points down at 1.4 time and 21 at half time but a second half onslaught where they kicked 11 goals to none saw us come home empty handed. Atila kicked two goals and Anthony 1 whilst Under 17’s Ryan was named in the best along with 105 year old Kirk, Nabil, Otter, Jarrod and Atila.

Our ladies rounded out the weekend with their Sunday game against Hillside Sharks Football Club. Despite being down on numbers (due to a spate of injuries and some unavailability) and putting out an SOS call on Friday night for players our ladies put in a massive effort. Scores were close at quarter time with the Sharks holding a 3 point lead – 1.3 to 1.0. Our ladies then stepped up and put on the only three goals of the second term to lead 4.1 to 1.6 at the main break – a 13 point lead that was much deserved. Hillside came out hard as expected in the second half and kiced 3.3 to one behind to again take the lead, this time by 7 points at the final change. Our lack of a bench hurt us in the last term as they kicked 2.1 to out 1 goal as they ran out 14 point winners. Kate kicked 2 goals while Kylie, Tricia and Jaymi-Jaymi Lei kicked one each. Jaymi-Lei was named best along with the Devine sisters Tricia and Bianca, Karina, Kate and Kiandra. Everyone at the club is so proud of the efforts of you ladies in the face of such adversity and wanted to thank all those who chipped in and helped out to ensure we could field a side. Much appreciated!

Next week see’s a huge home game again for us with the 19’s, Ressies and Seniors taking on Burnside Heights. Their senior side knocked off highly fancied Coburg Districts this week with big Josh Covelli a constant threat so our boys will need to be at their best to chalk up win number 3 for the season. The Thirds are in action on Friday night at home against Maribyrnong Park so get along Friday night and support the boys!

Womens and Junior fixtures are still yet to be confirmed bu watch for details as they come
