Weekend Wrap - Round 6

13 May 2018 by Roxburgh Park Football Club

The weekend promised some great games and boy did we deliver!

Action kicked off on Friday night as the Thirds took on Maribyrnong Park at home in absolutely terrible conditions. We got the jump early and kicked the only goal of the first term to lead by six points at 1/4 time – 1.4 to 0.4. We continued working hard and still had a 3 point lead at half time as we kicked another goal to the Lions 1.3. Unfortunately, unlike the weather, our scoring dried up after half time as we went goal-less after the break and Marby added 3.3 to lead by 17 points at 3/4 time 17-34. Marby kicked 2.5 to no score for us to run out winners by 34 points. Collo and Anthony with our goals while Jarrod, Paul, Harun, Andy, Jamie and James were the best.

Saturday action saw Burnside Heights travel to Lakeside in what was expected to be 3 close, hard fought games.

The Under 19’s got the day off to the perfect start, spanking the Bears by 112 points. We led by 20 points at quarter time as we kept them scoreless, then 46 points at half time as we added another 5.2 to 1 goal. the lads didn’t take the foot off the throat after the break as they piled on another 5.8 (work on that goal kicking Joshua) to 2 behinds and held a lead of 82 points at the final change. We kept piling on the pressure in the last, again kicking 5.2 to 2 behinds to run out winners – 17.20-122 to 1.4-10. Jack kicked 6 and Leo 3 while Jake, Tyler and Ahmed added two each. Jack was named best on ground alongside Daniel, Jake, Brock, Leo, and Jake T. That win now puts the boys second on the ladder with a top of the table clash with the undefeated Moonee Valley to come next week.

The 2’s Crew were up next and wanted to continue the roll they have been on. Unfortunately for Burnside, they offered little resistance. Like the 19’s, our boys came out hard and defended brilliantly while putting the score on the board. the Bears couldn’t hit the scoredboard while we helped ourselves to 8.5 to hold a massive 53 point lead at the first break. A 3.4 to 1.4 second term saw the lead stretch to 65 points at half time and the game was done. Our boys used the breeze brilliantly in the premiership quarter and added 9.3 to 1 goal as we led by 116 at 3/4 time. A wasteful last term saw us add 3.5 into the wind as they kicked 2.2 and we won by 125 points, 23.17-155 to 4.6-30. A great spread of goal kickers saw 3 kicked by Belal, Moudy, Aaron, Matt and Carlos while Ryan, Domenico and Reece kicked 2 each. It’s great to see guys like Carlos, Dom, Geeza and Reece named in the best and putting pressure on the boys in the senior side for spots. Marz and Youssef were also named in the best in what was a dominant performance. The win keeps the boys undefeated and top of the ladder for another week.

The seniors rounded out the day in what was expected to be a tight contest between two clubs with damaging forward lines. It was tight at the end of the first quarter as we led by the barest of margins, 3.2 to 2.7 as the visitors struggled to adjust to the Lakeside wind tunnel! Faz’s address at the break did the trick as we piled on 5.6 to no score and held a 37 point lead at half time. The Bears used the breeze better in the third quarter and cut the lead to 24 points at the final change, 3.4 to our 1.3 setting up a tense finish. However, after we’d eaten the 3/4 time oranges we kicked away again, booting 7.5 to 2.2 and winning 16.16-112 to 7.13-55. Considering the Bears line up includes the leading goalkicker in Div 2, we did a brilliant job to keep Covelli to 2 goals, thanks to the efforts of Kajan (in place of our regular full back Adrian who was out injured) and the entire back line. When you consider we were also missing Sammy, Jamie, Stone and Tom the effort means even more. the spread of goalkickers would be most pleasing for Faz, with 3 each to Tumay, John and Mark while Luke and Nathan added 2 each. The skipper, despite being under an injury cloud all week, stood up again as he does most weeks, along with Hayden and Micheal with great contributions also from Ferras, JC and Kaj.

Sunday action at Lakeside saw the Under 9’s take on Moonee Valley and the kids had a great game. There was some great skill on show and brilliant attack on the footy. It was also awesome to see Hannah play her first game after enjoying watching her brothers play in the 11s and 13s. Hope you enjoyed it Hannah!

The 11’s followed and were looking to consolidate their spot on the top of the ladder as they took on Aberfeldie . We held a 1 point lead at quarter time following a great goal to Taj in the first term but unfortunately poor kicking at goal after that cost us any chance of the win as the score ended 1.6-12 to 3.1-19. Taj was the only goal kicker while Yousef, Jakob, Noah, Coda, Jesse and Taj were in the best. Also a big shout out to Jonathan playing in his first game who played brilliantly. We need to work on our composure with the ball and start hitting up targets. The good news is that we still find ourselves at the top of the ladder so just need to move on and improve again next week.

The Under 15’s followed and were expecting a tough game following their move up to Div 3 and they got a great tough game against Abers. A tight first term saw the gorilla’s leading by 2 points before they extended that to 5 points at half time. Jason pulled the boys into line at 1/2 time and the boys responded by kicking 3 goals to 1 and take a 6 point lead into the final change. We kicked 4 goals to 2 in the last to run out winners by 19 points. Mo and Ramzy again leading the way with 3 each with Abi, Ishac, Zac, Zack, noah and Chris in the best. The boys stay on top of the ladder and are looking great under the super coach!

The final game of the day at home saw the Under 18 youth girls play their first game in the newly formed Division 2 against Maribyrnong Park and they got the result they had been looking for. A 23 point lead at quarter time set the day up for the girls as we kicked 3.6 to 0.1. We then added 3 goals to 2 in the second and went in with a 29 point lead. A 4.5 quarter while the Lions were held scoreless saw us lead by 58 points at 3/4 time and 2.1 final quarter while again holding them scoreless saw us triumph 12.12-84 to 2.1-13, a final margin of 71 points. Shelby, Sarah, Cookie and Alana each kicked two while the best were Danira, Jasmine, Analeise, Samantha, Aya and Cookie. A great reward for the hard work you have been putting in girls. It’s also great to see a full bench as girls return from injury and Cannon’s duty and shows what we can do.

The other two games on the weekend saw the 13’s and 17’s travel away but unfortunately both returned home without a win.

The 13’s were away to Avondale Heights and were looking to build on some strong work at training but were unable to go with a slick Avondale team who eventually won by 79 points. Zein kicked 3 and Emi kicked 1 while amongst the best on the day were Mayz, SOK (Son of Kirk – Tay), Shannon, Emi and Zein. Keep working at it boys, Daniel has you on the right path and you need to train hard and let the results come.

Tim’s Under 17’s were up against Keilor Park and despite being in the game at 3/4 time, only trailing by 14 points, the Devils took the game away in the final term and won by 44 points. Rami kicked 3 and Mo had two while the best were Ryan, Beany Jnr, Jaimon, Rami, Walid and Eyad. You are getting closer each week boys and were right in it until the last break. Keep believing and keep working hard!

Next week starts with Friday night Womens action when we take on Sunbury Lions at Lakeside. Let’s get the crowd down and have The Nest rocking for the ladies.

We have some huge games on Saturday with the Under 19’s and 2’s crew having a top of the ladder clash with Moonee Valley, the 19’s currently in second while the Ressies are on top. Our senior boys will also be looking to end the Fog’s unbeaten run this season in a 1v3 match-up at Ormond Road. The thirds will take on Keilor at Green Gully on Saturday as well.

On Sunday the Under 9s kick off the day at Lakeside against Avondale Heights while the 11’s host Maribyrnong Park in a must win clash. The Under 15’s host the also undefeated Burnside Heights in a top of the table clash that is sure to challenge the boys. The 17’s follow that with their game against Pascoe Vale.

The Youth Girls are away to Hillside Sharks while the Under 13’s have the bye.
