Weekend Wrap

2 Jul 2018 by Roxburgh Park Football Club

We started with Friday night footy at home at Lakeside as our 17’s took on Keilor Park looking for their first win of the season. On the big stage with a big crowd behind the boys, they came out fired up and got their confidence up nice and early. A completely dominant first quarter got the boys up and about as they held a 30 point lead after kicking 5.1 to 1 behind. The boys continued with the pressure and shut out the Devils again as they didn’t concede a goal and scored another themselves to lead by 32 points at the main break – 6.2 to 6 behinds. The third term saw our boys continue to dominate the game as they added 5.3 to one point and held an unbeatable 64 point lead as we entered the final term. The boys learnt a valuable lesson on what happens when the effort drops off as we let KP kick 5.3 to our 2 points but we had enough of a lead to run out winners by 33 points. Eyad and Billy were massive for us up forward, sharing 7 between them while Mo kicked two and we had singles kicked by Mustafa and Mailk. In Tim’s best were Malik, Mo, Alex, Billy, Adrian and Nick. It was great to see Tim and the boys get reward for all of their effort this season and a few more win’s might be possible before the season is out if the work rate and effort matches this one Well done lads!

The Thirds were at home to Aberfeldie and took it right up to the team sitting second on the ladder. In a dour first term where neither team wanted to give an inch, no goals were scored but we held the smallest of leads, 3 points playing two as the teams swapped ends. the physical contest continued after the break and the teams were locked at the same margin as they went back to the rooms at half time as both added 1.1 for the term and we had shocked the visitors by leading them for the first half. After half time the game started to open up and both sides were able to score a little more easily with the Gorilla’s getting on top kicking 4.1 to 2.1 but the margin was still only 11 points as we entered the final term. Unfortunately, our boys gave it everything but came up short as the visitors kicked another two goals in the final term to take the margin out to 25 points as the siren sounded. It was a great effort from the boys against highly fancied opposition and they can all be proud of their efforts. The goal kickers on the day were Jarrod, Atila and crowd favourite Khalil, which was a great effort! The best on the day were Jamie, Jarrod, Timmy, James, Tylar and Khalil.

With the Under 19’s having a walkover following the withdrawal of the Bears Under 19s side, the Reserves kicked off a strange day as we travelled to Burnside Heights to take on the Bears. We were missing a few numbers on the day so Nathan stepped up from Under 17s to help out on the day as we took to the field with 19 men. We jumped out of the blocks well and if we kicked straight could have put the game to bed at quarter time. The scoreboard read 4.9-33. The backline continued their domination in the second quarter while we added 3.2 to lead at half time. After the break the theme continued as the backs refused to give up a score while the forward added another 3.4 and made it a comfortable margin at 3/4 time. The final quarter saw the game change, possibly through the lack of rotations as we leaked a few goals while scoring 2.4 to still run out winners by 50 points. Goal Kickers were Jayjay with 4, Mazen with 2 and singles to Matt, Dogga, Kaj, Chadie, Dom and Tilly. Phil’s best were Verga, Tilly, Tyla, JayJay, Dogga Jnr and Limpy. Still 4 games clear on top and going well, just need to get all the boys to the game.

The Seniors followed the trend set by the 17’s and Ressies by having big leads then letting them go, but this one had a different result. Inaccurate kicking in the first term saw us give up the lead at quarter time as the Bears took a shock lead – 2.1 to 1.4, a scoreline that would haunt us at the end of the game. In the second quarter it seemed like normal service had been resumed as our boys woke from their slumber and slammed on 9.3 to 2.2 and we’d blown it out to 40 points as we head for the rooms. After half time, it was like a completely different side came out to play. Burnside poured on the pressure and hit the scoreboard, kicking 6.3 to 2.1 and the margin at the final change was suddenly down to 14 points. The final term was all Bears as we capitulated, scoring only 3 goals and letting them kick 3.2 and a shock 3 point win. Given they outscored us for 3 quarters they thoroughly deserved the win and it’s a good kick in the pants for our boys that we can’t expect to play one good quarter and win a game against any opponent. Cappa and the Chicken Lover Ferras kicked 3, while H, Sabba, Anth, Fazz, Pitty and Barney added one each. Best on the day were Ferras, H, Pratty and Pitty. the result drops us to second on the ladder a game behind the Saints and only % above the Valley and Thunder.

Junior action on Sunday saw the Under 9s travel to Hadfield where all the skills of the little ones were on show. the kids are learning a heap under Scott and Nathan and they have come so far since the start of the season.

The Under 11’s hosted top of the table Maribyrnong Park and the story of the last few weeks played out again, a disappointing first half followed by a fighting second half. Missing a handful of key players, we struggled to get on the board and conceded 2 goals in the first term then 3.1 in the second to trail by 31 at the main break. After half time, some changes were made, throwing Zane from the back pocket onto the ball being one and the team came to life. We kicked 2.2 while keeping the Lions scoreless and suddenly as the final quarter started we were within 17 points. Unfortunately, an early goal for Marby in the last term saw our boys drop their heads as Marby then added another to run out winners by 28 points. Salah and Raging Bull Huss with the goals while the best were Huss, Copp the tackling machine, Billy, Zane, Jakob and Lucas The effort after half time was terrific boys, just bring that for 4 quarter next week. The result leaves the boys 5th so still a chance of playing finals!

The Under 13’s took on Glenroy away and put in a huge effort but came up short. We were in athe game at quarter time trailling by only 11 points with the score 3.0 to 1.1. the Roys kicked away a little in the second term as they added another 3 goals to our one and led 6.1 to 2.3. the 3rd term was a real struggle as both teams failed to kick a goal, with Glenroy adding 5 behinds while we did not trouble the scorers. We failed to hit the scoreboard in the last term despite our best efforts as the hosts added 2 more to run out winners 8.7 to 2.3. the effort is there boys, just need to add a little polish and finish off the hard work. BJ and Emi with the goals while the Imran, Roddy, Cody, Zein, Eggy and Matty were among the best

The Under 15s were away to West Coburg and looking to get back onto the winners list after a close few weeks. West Coburg jumped us in the first half, leading by 11 at quarter time and 30 at the main break. We got a little more organised after half time and matched their 2 goals but the margin was still 33 at the last change – 8.8 to 3.5 and we had a lot of work to do. Unfortunately we couldn’t bridge the gap as the Burgers kicked away winning 13.8 to 5.7.Ramzy kicked 3 and Mo kicked 2. Our best were Cody, Ramzy, Mo, Billy, Steve and Ali. the boys are still 5th on the ladder and a chance of playing finals but just need to start getting the results their efforts deserve.

The last game for the weekend was the Under 18 Youth Girls game and their recent roll continued. Travelling to Burnside for a must win game the girls really turned it on. We held a slim 9 point lead at quarter time but hot our straps after the break and kicked away to a 28 point lead at half time, 6.10 to 3 straight. The girls continued to attack after the break and added another 4 goals to 1 to blow it out to 47 points at 3/4 time. The final term saw 3 goals kicked by each side as our girls enjoyed another fine victory, 13.17 to 7.3. Cookie helped herself to half a dozen goals, Kirrily kicked 3 and Sarah, Alana, Shelby and Samantha kicked 1 each. Best on ground were Cookie, Kirrily, Janine, Sarah, Ash T and Mona.

Next week on Friday night our Women, fresh off the bye, take on Strathmore in a game we will be looking to win given it’s the second last game of the season.

At home we take on Moonee Valley in 3 massive match ups. The 19’s play against the top side and will be looking for a good result to set up a finals run. The Reserves have a 1 V 2 match up on the cards and in the seniors it is 2 V 3 with a chance to skip away for the winner while the loser finds themselves two games off top spot. With 3 massive games like this who wouldn’t want to be down at Lakeside to catch the action?

The Thirds take on Maribyrnong Park away in a clash they could get a very good result in. If we have the same effort as last week then we are a very big chance.

On Sunday the Under 9s are away to St. Francis, the 11s are away match up at Airport West. The Under 13’s are away to Oak Park, the Under 15s can enjoy the weekend off with a bye, the Youthies have a huge match up away to Marby in a battle of 3 V 4 which is sure to test our girls.
