WEEKEND WRAP - Seniors

15 Jul 2018 by Roxburgh Park Football Club

The end of the season is getting closer in the Essendon District Football League and the twists and turns keep on coming.

We started the week on Friday night with our women playing their last game of the season against Keilor Park. Unfortunately for the girls, our opponents were cleaner in front of goal and that’s what made the difference in the end. It was a bright start as both sides were up an about and added two goals apiece, our behind separating them at the first change – 2.1 to 2.0. The second corner continued with an arm wrestle as we added 1.2 to 1.1 and the lead had gone out by one more point as the game reached the half way point. In the third quarter our girls couldn’t split the big sticks as we kicked 2 behinds to their 1.3 and we found ourselves behind by 5 points as the girls took their final break of the season. We needed to get the ball inside 50 and use it well to get the 4 points but it wasn’t to be a we kicked 3 behinds to 3 goals straight and lost by 20 points. Our goal kickers were Tricia, Macca and Freedom while our best were Danira, Jaymi, Karina, Jess, Kate and Tricia. Enjoy the off season ladies and see you back big and better than ever in the pre-season.

The Under 19’s started the day at home on Saturday against Northern Saints. Our boys didn’t start the game well and gave up a 28 point quarter time lead, 1 goal playing 5.4. The Saints kept us goalless in the second quarter as the lead blew out to 49 points at half time. Our boys were stung into action after half time and stemmed some of the bleeding holding the visitors to 2.3 for the term while adding 1.2 but the margin was still 57 points at 3/4 time. With pride to play for the Maggies came out and put some respectability onto the scoreboard as we added 4 goals to 3 with the final margin being 51 points. The main goal kickers were Khaled with 2 and singles to Brock, Rami, Eyad and Jordy. Our best players were Brock, Cyril, Dobes, Jake H, Khaled and Ryan.

The Ressies were up next and looking to continue their unbeaten run which extends all the way back to July 29 last year when we lost to the Northern Saints. It’s safe to say the same result didn’t occur this weekend. We got off to a flying start with one of the deadliest forward lines seen in Div 2 ressies as we unloaded on the Saints, kicking 6.2 to nothing and holding a handy 38 point lead at half time. The carnage continued despite the change of ends, when we added 5.2 to 1 goal and the game was over at the half way mark, 11.4-70 to 1.0-6. We didn’t let off after half time as Phil implored the guys to keep pushing and we added 6.2 to 2 behinds to make the margin at the final change an even 100 points. The final quarter was what Rex Hunt would have described as a “Destroyation” as we piled on 9.2 to one behind and won by 167 points – 28.8-176 to 1.3-9. Having just returned from a European vacation, regular senior star Hammer played some ressies footy to get his fitness back where it needs to be and with new teeth and a nice tan, he did what he wanted up forward kicking 6, alongside 6 from Billy, 5 each from the Mourad boys Moudy and JayJay, Lamanna and Dom kicked 2 while Bubba and Stoney kicked one each. Our best players(in what was really a brilliant team effort) were Alan, Timmy (playing off a wing instead of his customary half back), Daniel Sedge, Lamanna, Hammer and Billy. What made the day even better was that the win was achieved without guys like Micko and Chadie in the side which shows the the depth the 3rds have given us. Phil also wanted to mention Cyril and Jordy who backed up from their 19s game and played the full game for the ressies.

The senior game was a game where we again seemed to have played one good quarter of footy and that was nearly good enough to get us over the line. Despite kicking with a slight breeze, we let the Saints get on top early and, as has been the case the last few weeks, despite having the same amount of scoring shots, we trailed by 10 points, 2.4 to 4.2. In the second term the visitors opened up the gap with the breeze, kicking 3.4 to 2 goals and they led by 20 points as we went in for the half time break. In the 3rd quarter we really turned the jets on and scored at will…unfortunately most of the scores being behinds. We owned the quarter but 4.8 wasn’t the reward we deserved as we gave up two goals from unnecessary 50m penalties and were down by 1 point with a quarter to go. A fast start added a few and a great Cappa snap put us 8 points up with not long to play but the Saints would not be denied as they added 4.5 and won by 2 goals. Cappa was playing the lone hand up forward in the absence of Hammer and Sammy, kicking 7 while we also had singles from Sabba, Macca, H and Barn. 3 close losses in a row and we need to bounce back next week boys.

Our Thirds boys were away to Keilor who were sitting in 4th place and it looked like a tough task – nobody told our boys that though! We made a great start, kicking 4.3 in the first term and took a lead over the hosts who could only add 3.1. Keilor seemed to have found their mojo after 1/4 time are the added 4.1 to our 1.4 and suddenly we were down at half time by 7 points. With Atila giving us a massive target up forward we stormed back into the game after half time, with the big unit running amok as we piled on 6 goals straight to 2.2 and we’d shot out to a 15 point lead. In a tense final term it was back and forth as the lead kept changing. With just seconds left in the match Atila kicked his 9th goal of the game to give us a lead we’d hold onto as we won 13.11-89 to 13.5-83. Aside from Atila kicking 9 we also had single goals kicked by James, Justin, Andrew and Liam. Joel couldn’t go past Atila for best on ground with Jamie, Abhi, Liam, Jarrod and Kirky also in the best.

Next week we again have a massive week of footy ahead of us! The senior side is now 4th on the ladder and face 5th place Coburg Districts in a real 8 pointer for both sides. Win and we go two games clear inside the 4….lose and we are in danger of being out of the 4. An absolute must win game! The 19’s will also be playing at Cole Reserve but against Moonee Valley for the second time in 3 weeks. Ressies face the team they beat for the flag last year while the other Saturday game has the Thirds at home against Greenvale

This weeks wrap is bought to you by Anytime Fitness. If you are looking to shed that beer belly or just start toning up those flabby chicken wings, make sure you go to Anytime Fitness in Roxy and ask for Nathan or Hayden and tell them the Magpies sent you!
