Weekend Wrap - Senior Edition

24 Jul 2018 by Roxburgh Park Football Club

Another big week in the EDFL as senior action continued and we came to the end of the regular season for the juniors.

The Under 19’s couldn’t get the numbers together for their game so had to forfeit so we only had 3 games on Saturday.

The Reserves took on Coburg Districts who were sitting in second place and looked to be a real test given previous encounters. We did the Roxy thing in the first quarter…..which seems to be kicking poorly despite dominating the game and a 17 point lead should have been bigger at quarter time – 1.0-6 to 3.5-23. Our yips continued in front of goal in the second term as we added 4.7 but restricted the Lions to 1.1 and we had a comfortable 41 point lead at half time. We straightened things up after half time and kicked 5.1 for the term while restricting the hosts to 1.2 and we’d blown it out to 64 points at the final change. The final term was our most productive as we added 7.3 to 1 straight, winning by 103 points – 4.3-27 to 19.16-130. Once again our forwards had a day out, Jay the main goalkicker with 6, Belal with 4, Matt 3, Marz 2 and singles to Moudy Betts, Captain Hammy McLarty, Lamanna and Lo Presti. Amongst the best were Brandon, Jake, Tim, Lamanna, Chadie and Mazin. That’s a year now without a loss! Great effort boys, keep it up right up and get that hat-trick!

The seniors were up next and it was a familiar story to the last few weeks with poor kicking for goal seemingly going to cost us a result again. At quarter time it looked like the Vesnaver boys were going to prove a handful for us as each had kicked a goal and we trailled by 11 points, 3.2-20 to 1.3-9 – Mr. Golden Fist Dale kicking our only goal of the term. Things didn’t improve in front of the big sticks as we squandered shots at goal kicking 2.6 for the term to 4.2 and the lead was 19 points as the game entered the second half. We straightened up the kicking but didn’t put scores on the board, only adding 1.1 in the 3rd term to the Lions 2.4 and we were staring down the barrel of a big loss, behind by 28 points at 3/4 time. However, with the memory of our last visit in the back of our mind where we came from 20 points down at the last change to win, our boys continued to pile on the pressure and it paid dividends. With 7 goals in the final term we’d turned the game on its head and ended up winning by 17 points, a huge 45 point turn around in a quarter of footy! The win could have been bigger had we kicked straight….a 7.9 quarter showing our dominance, with the skipper missing 3 shots in the final term. Time to get some goal kicking training in Harley! Final scores: 10.8-68 to 11.19-85. Goal kickers were Luke and Ryan with 3 and singles to Ryan, the returning Tumay, the Dimmie smashing Adrian, the chicken lover Ferras and Sprouts’ mate Mark. Our best were Geeza, Friesy, Faz, Carlos, Travis and Alex. The win also puts us two wins clear of Districts now with the bye to come this week so that last term was massive in the context of our season.

The Thirds were looking to claim another scalp after a great recent run of form as they took on Greenvale at home. Unfortunately for the boys, the Jets were the faster starters and flew out to a 4 goal lead at the first change as they held us to 3 behinds while kicking 4.3. We clicked into gear in the second quarter, hitting the scoreboard with 2.2 while restricting the Jets to 1.1 and suddenly it was game on – 2.5-17 to 5.4-34. After that, things didn’t go our way. Greenvale kicked away again, adding 5 straight in the 3rd quarter to 1 behind and in the last quarter we couldn’t get it through the goals as we added 3 behinds to 1 goal to eventually go down by 49 points – 2.9-21 to 11.4-71. Our two goals coming from Jarrod and Atila while the best players on the day were premiership superstar Kirk Dsilva, Abhi, Jamie, Jarrod, Justin and Jay. One more week to go boys, let’s go out with a big one and knock of second on the ladder!

Next week the Seniors and Reserves have the bye while the Under 19’s have a mammoth clash against Strathmore which could decide whether we play finals or not. The Thirds play their final game for the season against the second placed West Coburg and will be looking to go out with a win.
