🚨WEEKEND WRAP🚨

31 Jul 2018 by Roxburgh Park Football Club

A slightly shorter wrap this week with no senior/reserves action and only two junior teams playing in finals

The only two games on Saturday were the final game of the season for the Thirds and our Under 19s game.

The thirds were in action against West Coburg who were second on the ladder and seemed like being a tall order for our boys to get the better of. We had a few boys out injured or unavailable through work and it was great to see a few senior/ressies boys helping out. Half the boys who filled in had been pre-arranged to give them a chance to get some match fitness and confidence heading into the finals for ressies and seniors. The Burgers were at home and got the start they would have wanted with 4 goals to one and our boys had some work to do. To our boys credit, they came back hard after quarter time – 3 goals to 1 and trailed by only 6 points as we went into the main break. A tight 3rd quarter saw only 3 goals kicked as both teams defended for all they were worth, with the home side kicking 2 goals to 1 and leading by 12 at the final break. The final term was a cracker!! Both teams had a massive crack and in a huge result, our lads managed to beat the home team, kicking 2.3 to 2 behinds with the final score reading 7.6-48 to 7.7-49. A great effort considering Atila got stretchered off with about 3 minutes left and Abdul also got sent to hospital with concussion. He’s home now and well which was great news. Atila kicked 3 as our major target up forward while we also had goals kicked by Liam, Saba and both the Elms boys. Our best were Saba, Alan, Jarrod, Kirky Jamie and Kaj. A great effort from the boys winning 3 of their last 4 and ending up one spot out of finals in 5th. Considering we didn’t have a team or coach when round 1 started it is a testament to the hard work of Joel and his team in bringing the boys together and we’ve seen them improve each week. About half the thirds squad are still training with the two’s and will put their hands up for two’s selection in the coming weeks, their form certainly warrants a look. Great stuff boys.

The Under 19s were the other Saturday game playing Strathmoreaway. It was 4 scoring shots apiece at the end of the first term but we were behind by 5 points – 3.1 to 2.2. The hosts kicked further ahead in the second term with a 4 goal to 3 quarter and the half time lead was 13 points. Two goals apiece in the third quarter saw the margin at 3/4 time sitting at 15 points. Our boys tried their guts out in the final term but couldn’t bridge the half time gap and ended up short by 13 points – 11.9-75 to 9.8-62. Ryan and
Jack kicked 2 each while we had single goals from Jake T, Michael, Ahmed, Jarrio and Khaled. Our best players were Ahmed, Ryan, Jake T, Brock, Tyler and Jack. The loss see’s us now slip into 5th a game out of finals so a big few weeks coming up for our boys.

On Sunday the Under 11’s travelled to Canning Street to play their elimination final against Airport West. We led the head to head 2-1 after 3 really close games throughout the year and we were looking to go make it 3-1 on Sunday. Unfortunately for our boys, it wasn’t to be. We were unable to hit the scoreboard at all and conceded 3.4 for the game, with 1.4 coming in the final term when our boys dropped their heads when they realised their dream run was over. A disappointing way to end the season but we need to look at the positives with the majority of the side being bottom age, and a handful of those still eligible for Under 9s. To make a final given the age and experience of this team was a massive achievement. Parker was best on ground in a great display down back where we took on larger kids and beat 2 and 3 opponents at some stage. Also in the best were Taj, Johnny, Lucas, Cooper and Mayen. Thanks to coach Mada for the awesome job he did with this group this season and to Nez for keeping everyone organised. Thanks also to all of the parents who help out on match day and at training.

The Under 15’s were also in action, playing West Coburg at Jacana in their elimination final. Unfortunately they also met the same fate as the Under 11’s as they dropped out at the elimination final stage. The Burgers got the start they would have been looking for, kicking 4.4 to no score at 1/4 time and holding a 28 point lead. We fought hard to get back into it in the second and restricted their flow, keeping them to 1.2 while adding 1.1 ourselves but we still had a 29 point deficit at half time. the 3rd quarter was decisive as we conceded 4.1 but could only add a point and the margin had blown out to 53 points as we entered the final quarter. With only pride to play for our boys did themselves proud, outscoring their opponents kicking 2 goals to 1.2, with the final margin being 49 points. Our goals came through singles to Billy, Isshac and Nathan while the best were Nick, Nathan, Jordan, Terrone, Steve and Billy. Again, great work from Jason and his team this season. The boys started out in Div 4 and handed out regular 100+ point beltings during the grading games so were moved to Div 3 as a result. They acquitted themselves well in what was a much tougher division and did enough to make finals which is a huge achievement. I know all of the boys are keen to see Jason go on again next year as coach because they have learned so much from him this season. Thanks to all the helpers and parents who made this team come together!

Next week our Senior side travels to East Sunbury for an absolutely vital game against the Thunder. It’s 3rd versus 4th and the loser will be under immense pressure to retain their spot in the 4 while the winner will look to gain ground on the top 2. Given Moonee Valley and the Saints play each other this week, it’s vital we come away with a win if we want to finish top 2.

The Ressies are again in a game where it is 1 V 2 (it seems we have a new second place every week) and will be looking to remain undefeated as they take on a charging Thunder side.

For the Under 19s it will just about be the end of the road if we lose to the Thunder as they are the team directly above us on the ladder. Have a red hot crack this week boys and give yourselves a chance of playing finals.

The only other game of the weekend is a Semi Final on Sunday for our Under 18 Youth Girls side. Our girls have swept all before them since the split in divisions occurred and will be looking to continue that as they take on Hillside. Fresh off a big win over the same opponent a few weeks ago, our girls will be looking to book direct passage into the grand final with a win. Get along and show them the magpie army are a force to be reckoned with in the finals!
