🚨⚪⚫WEEKEND WRAP⚫⚪🚨

12 Aug 2018 by Roxburgh Park Football Club

Round 19 of Essendon District Football League Division 2 bought us slightly less action than we’d expected. With the Under 18 Youth Girls progressing directly to the grand final and all other junior teams now eliminated, we only had action scheduled for Saturday with the Under 19’s, Reserves and Seniors.

Unfortunately for the Under 19’s in what was to be their last game of the season, their opponents Strathmore Football Club forfeited the game and didn’t give our boys one last chance of playing for the season and entertaining our fans. We know all of the boys were bitterly disappointed to not get to play their final games of the season but unfortunately it was out of our hands as we were at the mercy of the opposition – or lack thereof…..

The Reserves were next up…..or should have been. The dreaded forfeit curse struck again as Hadfield Football Club weren’t able to get another players together to form a side.

So that left the seniors as the ONLY team from Lakeside Drive to take the park this week in search of 4 points. We made some changes with Billy coming in for his first senior game in two years. The current reserves leading goal kicker (currently on 49 goals) and our ressies forward target in our last two seasons was rewarded for his hard work and slotted into the forward line alongside Cappa and Sammy.

We started the game we and held a 21 point lead at the first break – 4.4-28 to 1.1-7. However, in the second term, Faz must have wanted to put in a call to the #EDFLTonight crew to get Sprouts down for another SHANK session as we failed to kick a major, instead finding the wrong side of the post 7 times! Hadfield had managed to put enough pressure on us by scoring up the other end and in a massive shock the team at the bottom of the ladder found themselves in front, 4.11-28 to 6.1-37. 15 shots on goal to 7 and we found ourselves down by 9 at half time

Without doubt the half time team talk would have centred around defensive pressure and not allowing the easy score from the Hawks as we held them to just three behinds and had 9 shots at goal ourselves. However, the poor conversion continued and we kicked 3.6 for the term, with the scoredboard at 3/4 time showing 7.17-59 to 6.4-40.

The final term continued along the same theme as previous weeks – lot’s of inside 50’s but lacking composure as we kicked 4.5 to 2.1 to run out winners by 35 points. The final score was 11.22-88 to 8.5-53. 33 shots on goal to 13 could have added up to a 15 goal thumping any other day but we bank the 4 points and make up some of the % on the top 2. Our goal kickers were Geeza with 3, Cappa with 2, Sammy with 2 and singles to JC, H, Barney and Uber. I won’t go into the point kickers but special mention to Hammer who hit the post running into an open goal. Named among the best were H, Uber, Geeza, Pitty, Sammy and Barn. The win keeps us 3rd on the ladder but with Districts losing on the weekend we’ve now assured ourselves of playing finals. the last two weeks are just about where we will finish and who we play.

Next week we have three games following the end of the season for the Under 19’s.

On Saturday the Seniors and Reserves will take on Burnside Heights Football Club at the Magpies Nest. Last time we played the Bears away they got the chocolates so we will be looking for some revenge this weekend. The Bears have been on a good run of late and their big Full Forward Josh Covelli will be a big threat we will have to watch out for after being in great form up forward recently. The Reserves boys will also be looking to tune up for their finals tilt as they look for the hat-trick of flags.

On Sunday, we’ve got the big one for the Under 18 Youth Girls as they play Hillside Sharks Football Club who we managed to just squeeze by in the Semi Final last week. the venue and time is still TBD but we will get the word out as soon as this is announced. Let’s get the entire Roxy family behind the girls on Sunday as they look to bring home their first flag!
