The Qualifying Finals in Division 2 have come and gone and what a great weekend of football we enjoyed. Both teams did our club proud as they beat their respective opponents to gain a well earned week’s rest with direct passage into the Grand Final at Windy Hill.

The Reserves kicked things off in what turned out to be a very close game against our Grand Final opponent from 2017 – Coburg Districts. It was cold and quiet breezy for the start of the Ressies game and that showed with the low scoring nature of the game. At quarter time we’d won plenty of the footy and gave ourselves enough looks at goal to have a handy lead but instead only held a 3 point lead as we were inaccurate in front of goal. the scores read 2.3-15 to 2.0-12. We were able to stay on top in the second quarter but the Lions gave us a good run for our money. It remained a tight, contested game which had not really opened up but we’d managed to work ourselves clear to a 12 point lead 5.4-34 to 4.2-36 by half time. the less said about our goal kicking in the third term the better. We added 7 straight behinds to Districts 1 goal and suddenly the margin was back to 7 points with one quarter to play. The final term saw the backline led brilliantly by Youssef completely stifle the Lions forwards and that equated to more shots on goal for the forwards at our end and we finally got reward for effort kicking 4.6 to 1 behind to run out winners by 36 points – 9.17-71 to 5.5-35. It was great to get the win in a very hard fought game and the margin probably ended up flattering the Lions a little in the end. Goal Kickers on the day were Aaron and Jay with while we had single goals kicked by Belal, Marz, Youssef, Anthony and Matt. Our best players were Verga, Tyla (who received a nasty cut near the eye but will be fine for the Grand Final) , Jake, Josh, Matthew and Alan. A great season so far boys but one more game to go in order to go 🔙2🔙2🔙

The Seniors faced the Northern Saints Football Club next up and went in as the under dogs given the Saints had beaten us in the three previous encounters this season. Any nerves we might have had were quickly pit to bed as our boys mugged the Saints in the first term and got reward for their effort in front of the big sticks. The forwards did their job, kicking 4 straight with Cappa looking a constant threat while the backline strangled them at the other end, holding them to just 2 points as we took a 22 point lead into quarter time. The Saints got into the game a little in the second quarter but relentless pressure form our backs held them to just 1.5 as we added 2.3 and we’d extended the margin to 26 points as we headed under the stands at Coburg City Oval. After half time we completely dominated, even despite being short rotations on the bench through minor injuries and the fact the weather had gotten worse. We added 5.4 for the term and get the boys from Mutton Reserve goalless for the second time in the match and by the final change of ends our lead had blown out to 58 points. With little for either team to play for in the final term, it became a bit more open and the Saints were able to add 3.3 but we added 4 straight goals to deliver a 61 point win and book our spot at Windy Hill on September 15. Luke continued his rich vein of form kicking 6 making it 16 in the last 4 weeks, Mark kicked 2 as did Micheal and John while Nathan, Tumay and Ryan also hit the scoreboard. Amongst a brilliant team effort standouts were Ryan, Adrian, Fazz, Travis, Jayke and the big chicken lover Ferras

Congratulations to all of the players, coaching staff, runners, helpers etc who have helped both of these sides be able to reach the Grand Final. It’s a massive achievement to have one team in a Grand final, let alone 2 and it is a testament to the strength of both these sides that we’ve achieved this. There is still one more game to go and it is the most important game of the year!

Let’s get the ENTIRE Magpie army behind the boys at Windy Hill on September 15th. It’s a brilliant place to go and watch footy and we want to show the rest of the league we’ve got the best support around!
